A large rural county just west of Duluth, Carlton County is home to Jay Cooke State Park and the 1,300 acre Kettle Lake State Wildlife Management Area. The county’s population is a little over 30,000 including the towns of Barnum, Carlton, Cloquet, Cromwell, Kettle River, Moose Lake, Scanlon, Thomson, Wrenshall, and Wright.
